We are so thrilled to once again join master percussionist and improviser Tatsuya Nakatani in a collaborative, fully improvised performance at Studio Ma. The first performance Katrina and I ever did together was with Tatsuya in May of 2019, so this will be a very special reunion! Katrina will present the first installment of her Dark Leaves installation to dance amongst -- a suspended forest of vine maple, purple smoke, and red cherry branches, and Tatsuya and I will improvise with Katrina in a collaboratively developed drone (rare to hear outside of Tatsuya's gong orchestra!). This is sure to be a spectacular night. We will follow the performance with a Q&A.
We hope to see you there!

Donations appreciated, $10-20 suggested. No one turned away for lack of funds.

Doors at 7:30; show at 8:00pm.

Please RSVP by sending an email to joey.largent(at)gmail.com.

*Masks + proof of vaccination or recent negative Covid test are required for entry to this performance. You can email us proof of vaccination or recent (~3 days prior to show) negative test in advance if you prefer. These extra precautions are in place to help keep Tatsuya Covid-free while he is on tour.

Thank you for your understanding.

Studio Ma is located in the University District (4332 University Way). The entrance is in the alley accessible via 45th or 43rd between University Way NE and 15th Ave NE (in the alley behind Beetle Cafe and EZ Copy N Print). The studio is inside a gray building across from the back of The Malloy apartments, neighboring the rear entrance of University Bookstore/Bookstore Parking Lot. Enter through the black metal gate and follow the ramp up to the door in front of you.

ABOUT THE PERFORMERS:

Katrina Wolfe’s primary work is the practice, teaching, and performance of Motion Awareness (Ma): a movement technique that Katrina has developed by integrating her experience in Butoh (experimental dance founded in 1950s Japan) with foundational aspects of Vipassana Meditation (as taught by S.N. Goenka in the tradition of Sayagyi U Ba Khin) which she practices daily. Motion Awareness also draws on Katrina’s lifelong work in visual arts, especially figurative sculpture and anatomy, as well her study of Iyengar yoga. In addition to sculpture, Katrina also practices drawing, oil painting, photography, and creates costumes and installations for her performance work. Her installations and costumes are made of various found and recycled items such as paper, fabric, glass, wax, extensive varieties of organic materials, and fresh or dried plants and flowers, amongst others. By interacting with - and intimately inviting the viewer to interact with - materials normally labeled as “compost” or “debris”, Katrina’s work explores issues of attachment, over-consumption, climate change, waste, and ephemerality. Her work seeks to offer both viewer and practitioner increased awareness of the universality of impermanence, resulting in the cultivation of intention, empathy, and compassion in all aspects of life.

Joey Largent’s work explores the relationships between sound, environment, and context, taking both conventional and custom-built acoustic instruments and delicately interweaving them with natural landscapes. His primary focuses are improvised music for dance and long-duration solo and ensemble compositions, often working with just intonation, feeling-based improvisation, timeless-based performance, and long, subtle tones that gradually unfold over time. Much of his performance and recording practices are done in or inspired by site-specific, isolated locations in nature, ranging from the terminal chambers of lava caves to mountain summits to the intersections of abandoned architecture with the natural environment. Joey’s compositional style comes from studies in Southeastern European folk music, butoh, improvisation, microtonality, and North Indian classical music, studying khyal gayaki of the Kirana Gharana and dhrupad rudra veena of the Dagarbani. Amongst others, he has studied with Rose Okada, Michael Harrison, Jung Hee Choi, and La Monte Young.

Joey’s work seeks to produce deep feeling and experience through sound-- one that is strongly immersive, sensitive, and relational to the experience of feeling full presence in an environment, attempting to offer the opportunity to explore the expansive qualities of place, self, and memory through listening alone.
