Rock Garden CD
Tatsuya Nakatani solo percussion recording. Self release through Nakatani-Kobo, 2019. Originally I named this project “Ma” during the recording process. Ma is an important part of my relationship to sound. Ma — an idea meaning meaning space, distance, air, feelings, things in between A and B, "the silence between the notes which make the music.” My process of composing music is based on improvisation, and I am always seeking an appropriate Ma in different compositions or situations. The decision to name this release Rock Garden came after the recording but before we designed the package. This recording sounds like a rock garden, all the Ma that has been created and captured.

There are 12 compositions on this CD. Performed, recorded and mixed by Tatsuya Nakatani during June and July 2019 in Truth or Consequences, NM, USA. Mastered by Andrew Weathers in Littlefield, TX. Photo and design by Erika Nakatani.

Rock Garden Extended cassette tape

This cassette release (includes download code) is from the same session material as the Rock Garden CD. Each side contains only 1 long composition. This material is not included on the CD.

Nakatani Gong Orchestra
live concert at Silo City -CD

Silo City is a group of abandoned grain silo buildings used for art and performances. This concert took place and was recorded in Marine A Grain Elevator at Silo City in Buffalo NY on June 13th, 2017. This is Silo Session #52, produced by Vault Arthouse Productions, directed by Kevin Cain. (https://vimeo.com/269899418)

Seventeen Chinese wind gongs in various sizes were played by fourteen local musicians. They spent the afternoon rehearsing and performed the concert that evening.

I separated the orchestra into three different rooms inside of the silo, and conducted them by moving back and forth on platform bridges connecting the rooms. It was an amazing experience for all of us, each room had a unique sonic resolution. Recorded by multi tracks and mixed down in two tracks for audio listening environment as a CD media.
