Nakatani Gong Orchestra Live at Silo City - CD
The NAKATANI GONG ORCHESTRA - NGO - is a nomadic, large ensemble contemporary sound art project. Local musicians are trained in Nakatani’s technique for playing his adapted bowed Gong, and he conducts them in a performance of his original composition. In the last decade, the NGO has performed hundreds of concerts involving thousands of participants around the world in the creation of these transformative sound works.
Silo City is a group of abandoned grain silo buildings used for art and performances. This concert took place and was recorded in Marine A Grain Elevator at Silo City in Buffalo NY on June 13th, 2017. This is Silo Session #52, produced by Vault Arthouse Productions, directed by Kevin Cain.
Seventeen Chinese wind gongs in various sizes were played by fourteen local musicians. They spent the afternoon rehearsing and performed the concert that evening.
I separated the orchestra into three different rooms inside of the silo, and conducted them by moving back and forth on platform bridges connecting the rooms. It was an amazing experience for all of us, each room had a unique sonic resolution. Recorded by multi tracks and mixed down in two tracks for audio listening environment as a CD media.
